Designing the head-on collision Nuclear Fusion Reactor
We can start the design as follows:
(1) Assume (Data from Internet)each reaction (Fuel Pellet) will supply an average UK person per year. (4500 KWH)
a. https://www.bing.com/search?q=Electrici ... b7c15b006a
(2) Express that Energy in Joules. (1KWH =3600000 joules)
a. 4500 KWH = 3600000 * 4500 =16,200,000,000 Joules

(3) From the equation E=MC*C, determine the change in mass.
a. Velocity of Light in meters per second = 299,792,458 metres per second
b. M = E/(C*C) =.80249E-7 = 8.385E-5 gms.

(4) From the change in mass, determine the mass of the pellet.
a. Mass of Deuterium = 2.014 amu
b. Mass of tritium = 3.016 amu
c. Mass of Helium = 4.0026 amu
d. Mass of Neutron = 1.008665 amu
e. Mass before fusion - Mass after fusion = (2.014 + 3.016) - (4.0026 + 1.008665)
= 5.03 - 5.011265
= 0.018735 amu
f. Percentage change = (0.018735/5.03) x100% = 0.3710%
g. Thus the mass of fuel before fusion should be 8.385E-5 /0.3710 = 0.00226 grams
(5) Determine the volume of the pellet, assuming the pellet is gas. density is 1/1700 of water
a. Assume density of pellet =1/1700, the volume should be 3.842 cc.
(6) Assume the pellet is cylindrical with radius 1cm. Work out the length of the pellet.
Length of pellet = 3.842/(3.1416*0.1*0.1) =1.223 cm
a. This assumes the pellet contains gas???
(7) From (2), determine the minimum volume of Lithium required.
a. Specific Heat is the amount of heat that must be added to one unit of mass of the substance in order to cause an increase of one unit in temperature
b. Specific Heat of lithium = 3.6J/g k
c. Mass of lithium to absorb 16,200,000,000 joules and raise 1000 degrees Kelvin
= (16,200,000,000/3.6) /1000 = grams = 4,500kg
***** Pause at this point as number is too huge!!!
d. Let us assume the size of the pellet is reduced to one tenth. The volume is reduced to 1/1000. The amount of Lithium needed is 4.5 Kg. This is much more reasonable.
(8) Then determine the size of the lithium reaction chamber. Assume Cylindrical in shape.
***Pause at this point --- Instead of one pellet for 1 year. Now one pellet is 1/1000 and thus used for 365/1000 days = 0.365 days or 8.76 hours.
For a home, change a Pellet every 8.76 hours is acceptable!
(9) Determine the exchanger to convert water to steam to drive turbine.
(10) Assume the Rail Gun uses Linear Accelerator, determine the dimension assuming impact velocity is 3.5Km per second.
a. Input energy to 2 projectile = m*v*v = 1*3500*3500 = 12,250,000 joules.
b. This can be less than the output energy of 16,200,000
(11) Alternatively assume the Rail Gun uses Cyclotron type technology, determine the diameter of the Cyclotron.
(12) Add in the possible loss factors and safety considerations, get a first round rough estimate.
