Global Responsibility on Climate Change [All Have to Clean Up Their Own Act]

文章 lucent »

As predicted, at the summit meeting in Scotland of world leaders gathered to discuss climate change, Western countries and their media lost no time in repeating the mantra about China being the world's largest emitter of greenhouse gases that lead to global warming.

That is factually correct but not the entire story.
Global warming results from not just the present emissions by China and India, the other country fingered by the West, but also the stock of such gases already in the atmosphere. It is a Global Responsibility on Climate Change that All Have to Clean Up Their Own Act!!!
According to calculations by climate scientists for the UN, China is responsible for 13% of the stock and India, just 3%. The US? At 25%, almost double that of China's. And the EU, 22%.On a per capita basis, US emissions are 15.5 tonnes, Canada, 18.6 tonnes, Australia, 17.1 tonnes, Germany, 9.4 tonnes. China at 7.4 tonnes emitted less than half of America's, while India clocked in at just 1.9 tonnes. You will be hard put to find this perspective in Western reporting. And in our own MSM too, sad to say.

And if you have been reading reports saying China is not doing enough to combat climate change, well, consider this:
China has committed to goals set in the Paris Agreement in 2015 and wants to achieve carbon neutral before 2060. In other words, 39 years at the most. It will take EU 71 years and America, 43 years. Given China's track record, there is every chance it will deliver before 2060.

Yet President Biden couldn't resist the chance to score political points. He chided the leaders of China and Russia for not caring enough to turn up in Scotland. This is rich for the leader of a nation that has walked away from the Kyoto Protocol in 1997 and the Paris Agreement in 2017 and thus wasted 24 years in the fight against global warming.

It is actually quite obscene, if you think about it. Rich nations with their two or three car families and which have polluted the atmosphere since the Industrial Revolution 200 years ago are now preaching global responsibility to poor countries struggling to deliver electricity to every remote village.

Sigh! -- Leslie Fong (former Strict Times editor)
